13 Gym Stereotypes – Funny People You Find At Every Gym


At peak hours, the gym can be a fascinating environment full of…interesting characters – the ubiquitous gym stereotypes.

If you go to the gym on a regular basis, you will undoubtedly come into contact with one or more of these sorts of individuals, making the gym an entertaining and sometimes distracting place. They are not only in your gym; you’ll find them in every other gym as well.

In fact, I’m sure you’ve encountered at least one of these types of individuals if you’ve been to the gym in the last few days.

The Guy Who Thinks He Is The Strongest

Do you know that guy who’s been going to the gym for a couple of months and is convinced he’s on his way to being a huge, ripped athlete? He trains four times a day, five days a week. He has every muscle-building supplement out there, and he even watches his diet religiously.

This guy puts in all this effort and wants to be able to build some muscles without actually doing anything. He doesn’t just want any muscles either. He wants to have the biggest arms in town, wants to look like a professional bodybuilder, and has dreams about being a fitness star on TV.

He spends hours working himself into a frenzy trying so hard – but what’s his secret?

He’s been reading too much into the broscience that’s floating around on the internet. He truly believes that because he’s been going to the gym, working out and eating right, that he is the strongest guy in the room.

Sadly, this isn’t always the case. In fact, many times these guys are the weakest at the gym because they’re not actually doing any real work. They’re just lifting weights that are too light for them and spending more time chatting with their friends than actually lifting.

So, next time you’re at the gym and see this guy strutting around like he’s king of the world, don’t be fooled. He might think he’s the strongest, but in reality, he’s probably one of the weakest. Save yourself some embarrassment and stay clear of him!

The Copycat

A mother in the gym came in to do her work out. She had just finished off with some chest presses and was heading to the bar for one more set when she saw a girl behind her finishing off her last rep. The woman could not resist copying what she saw, even though all of us know that it’s not polite or cool.

It can be quite amusing to watch people copy others at the gym, even though they know it definitely can be embarrassing if and when they get caught.

Some people might copy others because they want to look like them or because they think it will help them get better results. But in most cases, it just makes them look silly. You’ll find tonnes of such funny people at gym who have no clue how ridiculous they act –

I have friends who copy others all the time. At first, I thought it was because they wanted to look like them or hoped that it would help them get better results, but after talking about it with my friends, I realized that in most cases, they just do this to stand out.

People might want not want to be themselves and want to be someone else, but at the end of the day, they are still themselves. And that’s okay! You don’t have to be like everyone else to be cool or fit in. So next time you’re at the gym and you see someone copying your every move, just ignore them and keep on going. You’ll look better and feel better for it! And remember, be yourself – you’re awesome just the way you are! 🙂

The Instagram Queen

A few days ago, I found myself at a Crossfit gym, and there were people there that had been instagramming the whole time. The funniest thing was one girl who had been posting pictures of her workouts – but she was taking breaks to take more pictures! She started with a picture of herself holding a kettlebell up over her head and then after a few minutes of light stretching, she would do a few more rounds in the workout. It only took me about 10 minutes to realize she was taking breaks to snap pics in between training. I wanted to make fun of her for it, but honestly, I totally get it. Who doesn’t want to document their fitness journey? In an age where everyone is obsessed with social media, it’s no wonder that people are using it to track their workouts.

But what about the people who take things too far? I’m not just talking about the people who post pictures of themselves working out – I’m talking about the people who take pictures of EVERYTHING they do. Do you really need to snap a pic of your breakfast? Or your dog taking a walk? Or your feet as you lay in bed? Probably not, but some people seem to think that it’s necessary. And don’t even get me started on the people who take selfies in the gym. Don’t they know that we’re all there to workout and not to look at their duck face?

At the end of the day, it’s up to each individual to decide how much social media is appropriate. If you’re someone who likes to post pictures of your workouts, that’s great! Just make sure that you’re not taking away from your own workout time. And if you’re someone who hates selfies, don’t feel like you have to take them just because everyone else is. Do what makes you happy – just be sure to keep it within the limits of good taste. After all, we don’t want our Instagram feeds to turn into a total mess.

The Screamer

I’ve always been curious about people who moan and scream at the gym. I mean, they’re clearly not into it and I don’t want to look but I can’t stop myself. They’re just so intense.

It’s like watching a horror movie, you know it’s going to be bad, but for some reason you gotta keep watching. And half the time people are looking and listening and experiencing their own cringe-fest right along with me.

They must think we’re all laughing WITH them, not AT them. But really we’re just trying to hold our laughter IN because we don’t want to laugh AT them. We’re just trying to make it through the workout.

Don’t be the person drawing attention to himself due to his ridiculous noise. Be the one who gets attention because you are easily lifting a lot of weight with good form!

Maybe one day I’ll work up the courage to start screaming during my own workout, but for now, I’ll just keep laughing AT the screamers in the corner. Maybe if they’re lucky, they’ll never notice me.

The Singer

The guy at the gym with the loud singing had me doubled over with laughter. He was so, so bad. I don’t even know what song he was trying to sing. Everyone in the gym was watching him, but they probably just wanted to avoid hearing him for another second. He sang “I hope you’re happy now” on repeat for minutes on end, and I can tell you that I am not happy now.

I am not happy now.

I have never heard someone sing so off-key, and I’m terrified that he’s going to start recording himself on his phone. Luckily I think the treadmill next to him is loud enough to drown out his voice, but I can still hear it echoing in my brain. It sounds like a chorus of dying cats. If you want an idea of what this man sounded like, try yelling into the inside of your toilet while flushing it over and over again at the same time. That combination would be even more pleasant than listening to this guy try to hit notes that are not there. Sometimes you confused whether to feel bad or to laugh at these funny people at gym.

The girls working out looked embarrassed for him—one even rolled her eyes when she saw me watching them stare at him. I don’t blame them; it’s not like they can just un-hear his awful singing. Maybe he thought he was auditioning for American Idol or something, but he was way off the mark. I have a feeling that this guy is going to be the butt of all jokes at the gym from now on. I might even start calling him “the singer.”

I really hope that he takes the hint and stops singing soon, though. It’s giving me a headache. And not the good kind of headache, where you feel like you got your workout in and you’re ready to take on the world. No, this is the kind of headache where all you want to do is curl up in a ball under your desk and sleep for hours. Maybe if I put in some earplugs he’ll stop.

The “lift weight to impress others” crew

There are some guys who, for whatever reason, feel the need to lift weights in order to impress girls. And, let’s face it, it usually just ends up making them look silly, and am damn sure almost every gym is bound to have this gym stereotype.

I mean, come on, do you really think that a girl is going to be impressed by your ability to bench press a mere 100 pounds? Or by the fact that you can curl 5 pound dumbbells? If anything, she’s just going to think you’re a weakling.

So, if you’re one of those guys who is lifting weights in order to impress girls, stop it! It’s not working, and you’re only making yourself look like a fool. Instead, focus on developing other qualities that will actually impress a girl.

The Tiktok And Reels Guy

I think that people who film reels and tiktok at the gym are wasting their time because they could be working out. I’m sick of coming to the gym to find people on their cell phones, filming reels on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram. They could be lifting weights or even running on the treadmill, but instead they’re just on their cell phones.

What is with this obsession with being an influencer? Are you really that important that you need to have followers and likes? If you’re not doing it for fun then what’s your motivation? Is it about fame? Or wanting corporations to sponsor you? Are you breaking into the modeling industry too?

Is your story really worth filming if nobody is even around to watch it? Do you even want people to see your videos? Or are they just for personal reasons like reminding yourself of what happened or sharing with family and friends?

It’s the same thing with tiktok. What’s the point if all these apps are doing is taking up your time? You could be spending this time actually having fun, but instead you’re stuck on an app. Maybe it would be worth it if tiktok was educational. But that’s not the case at all. Tiktok influencers think that their lives are interesting enough to watch, but they’re not. People should spend their free time playing games, reading books or watching TV, not watching 15 second clips of someone else’s life.

So please, stop wasting my time and start working out. I’m not the only one who feels this way either. A lot of people are annoyed by these people who are just trying to get attention. Maybe if you put in a little bit of effort, you could actually be famous for something good instead of just being known as that person who films reels and tiktok at the gym.

The Sweaty Guy

It’s the middle of summer, and that means one thing: it’s hot outside. And what do people do when it’s hot outside? They go to the gym to workout. But what’s the worst part of going to the gym in the summer? It’s the sweaty guys who don’t wipe sweat off equipment.

These guys are the worst. They’re the ones who are dripping with sweat, and they don’t even bother to wipe it off the equipment before they use it. They just leave their sweat all over the bench press, or the treadmill, or the elliptical machine. And then other people have to use it after them, and they end up getting all sweaty too.

It’s not fair that people have to try and workout when the equipment is all sweaty. And it’s not fair that they have to work out on other people’s sweat too!

That’s why gym goers should take charge of this problem. If you see a piece of equipment with some guy’s dripping sweat on it, tell them to wipe it off before they touch it. Be polite about it though-don’t yell at them or anything like that. Just say something nicely so they know what the deal is. Maybe they’ll even appreciate your help!

The Guy Who Would Do Anything Except Workout

Every once in a while, you are bound to encounter in your gym an odd dude who will seemingly be doing “any damn thing” except actually working out.

You may spot him hanging out and gossiping on the bench press, or perhaps he is trying to lift up his locker with one finger, or maybe he’s just doing squats by himself in the corner of the locker room.

This guy often has a look of deep thought and ponderance plastered onto his face as if something really important had just crossed his mind. His hair is always perfectly gelled and parted to the side, and his pristine sweater-vest remains unblemished no matter what dumbbells or free weights he uses. No one knows where this guy came from, but we all know why he’s here: because one day, when God was handing out those “YOLO” tattoos that everyone got last summer, this guy’s arm was already full.

In between sets, he slaps on a coat of Axe body spray and sprays the same way a young millennial who just dropped out of college sprays his resume with a can of Febreeze after spending four hours watching Netflix at his parents’ house – to mask the reek of unemployment and not showering.

This man is The Guy Who Would Do Anything Except Workout at gym . 

He gets offended if someone refers to him as “lazy,” but it turns out that’s because he’s too busy doing anything except working out while wearing long pants in 80 degree weather while you’re over there dropping your fourth consecutive 10 pound dumbbell on your foot while squatting.

Sure, there are some activities that this guy might be interested in, but nothing that would compromise his “hardcore” gym persona. He is always down to discuss the newest episode of Game of Thrones or the rebound relationship he’s been having since his last break-up, but don’t even think about asking him what his bench press max is.

He’ll give you a long, complicated answer about how he doesn’t really believe in putting numbers on things and that the only thing that really matters is how you feel after your workout – which coincidentally is also the answer he gives when people ask him about his job or what he studies in school.

But at least The Guy Who Would Do Anything Except Workout is always down for a good conversation – unlike the girl who’s been on the elliptical for the past 45 minutes who just gave you the death glare when you asked her how her day was going.

So the next time you see such a typical gym stereotype at your gym, be sure to say hello and strike up a conversation. You may not be able to get him to break a sweat, but at least you’ll make some new friends. And isn’t that what gyms are really all about? Friendship and forging relationships with people who share similar interests? Well, that and looking hot in spandex. But mostly friendship.

The Mr Know It All

A few weeks ago, I was at my gym and I spotted the most quintessential guy- with his headphones on, hoodie up, and wearing basketball shorts. He was jumping up and down yelling “I’m legal! I’m legal!” to the horror of all the other gym goers.

No explanation needed for this one.

But this guy was more than just a funny gym goer- he was also the Mr Know It All. He was that guy who always has an answer for everything, and is always eager to share his wisdom with anyone who will listen.

And boy, did he have some advice for me!

“Dude, you’re doing it all wrong!” he yelled at me as I was struggling to do my first push up. “Here, let me show you how it’s done.”

So he demonstrated how to do a push up for me, and it was actually pretty good advice. But then he started giving me other tips about working out, which were all wrong.

He told me that I needed to eat no less than 6000 calories a day in order to put on muscle. He told me that I needed to workout twice for 45 minutes each time, in order to see gains.

He told me so many things, but they were all wrong… because he doesn’t know anything about fitness. And when I politely questioned his advice, he started squealing at me like the piggy little gym goer who was completely out of place.

Mr Know It All asked everyone around him if they agreed- and 7 out of 10 people nodded their heads. As it turns out, nobody knew any better.

Let’s hope Mr Know It All can find some new friends elsewhere. Because here at the gym, we’re all too busy trying to better ourselves to listen to his nonsense.

Gym goers beware of the Mr Know It All- this guy is always giving out bad advice! If you’re looking for tips on how to get fit, this is definitely not the guy you want to talk to. He’s clueless about fitness, and instead will try to tell you everything he knows about working out- which is nothing. So next time you see him at the gym, be sure to give him a good laugh (or even better, ignore him completely). Thanks for the laughs, Mr Know It All! You’re the comedy gold of the gym scene!

The Mirror Magnet

There’s always that one guy at the gym who is a mirror magnet. You know, the guy who can’t help but stand in front of the mirror and check himself out for hours on end. He might as well put up a sign that says “look at me!” because that’s all he seems to care about.

This guy is the epitome of the gym stereotype. He’s usually the buffest guy in the room, and he loves to show off his muscles. He’s always flexing and posing in front of the mirror, and he definitely doesn’t shy away from attention. In fact, he thrives on it!

But even though this guy loves to be the center of attention, there’s something a bit funny about him. Maybe it’s the fact that he takes himself so seriously, or maybe it’s his ridiculous poses. But whatever it is, there’s no doubt that he’s a source of entertainment for everyone at the gym.

So if you’re ever feeling bored at the gym, be sure to take a look at the mirror magnet. He’ll definitely put a smile on your face!

The Collector

If you’ve ever been to a gym, you’ve probably seen that one guy who hoards all of the equipment and weights. He’s the guy who is always working out, and he never seems to have enough space to actually use any of the equipment. You may have even wondered what his story is.

Well, I can tell you that this guy is a total stereotype. He’s the guy who can’t let go of anything, and he’s always trying to prove something to himself and to others. He’s also probably a little bit crazy, and he definitely doesn’t know how to have fun. In fact, he probably hates people who are actually enjoying themselves at the gym.

I think this guy is trying to make the gym his own personal stomping ground, but he also wants to prove something by getting bigger muscles than everyone else. I don’t know how much more of an explanation you need. It’s not like we’re talking about rocket science or anything; we’re simply talking about a regular gym-goer who has gone completely off of the deep end and taken it way too far.

It doesn’t really matter what kind of equipment he hoards either because he’ll always be working out on that one specific bench that no one ever uses – it’s almost as if he owns that specific bench. He probably puts up little signs and everything, and maybe even sleeps there every night, just so that he can make sure that no one else takes it from him.

I know this guy might sound like a total joke, but at the same time, you have to admit that he can be pretty annoying. He’s always in your way, and he’s always hogging all of the equipment. I’m not really sure what we can do to stop him, but hopefully, he’ll eventually realize that the gym isn’t his own personal playground and that other people actually need to use the equipment too. In the meantime, we can all just laugh at him and his ridiculous behavior.

The Clueless Guy

If you’ve ever been to the gym, you’ve no doubt seen him. The clueless guy. He’s the one who’s wandering around lost, looking at all the machines like he’s never seen them before. He’s the one who’s standing in the middle of the free weights area, completely unsure of what to do. And he’s the one who’s sweating profusely and making everyone else feel uncomfortable.

Don’t be that guy. If you’re new to the gym, here are a few tips to help you get started.

First of all, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Most of the people at the gym are happy to give you advice, and they’ll probably be impressed that you’re making an effort to learn.

Second, do some research before you go. Figure out which machines are best for your goals, and which exercises are best for your muscles. This will help you make the most of your time at the gym.

Finally, be patient. It takes time to get used to the gym environment, and it takes time to see results. Don’t expect to be a fitness expert overnight. Just focus on improving slowly but surely, and soon you’ll be crushing your fitness goals.

The bottom line? don’t be the clueless guy at the gym. Be confident, be prepared, and be patient. And most importantly, have fun! After all, that’s why we go to the gym in the first place. 🙂
